Wilhelm Hopfgarten (Berlin 1789 - Rome 1869) was a German sculptor who worked mainly with bronze.
After his father's passing, Wilhelm was raised by his uncle Heimlinger, who was a bronze caster. It was his uncle who introduced him to art and at the same time he attended the drawing and crafts course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, under the aegis of Ferdinand Collman. Wilhelm Hopfgarten (Berlin 1789 - Rome 1869) was a German sculptor who worked mainly with bronze.
After his father's passing, Wilhelm was raised by his uncle Heimlinger, who was a bronze caster. It was his uncle who introduced him to art and at the same time he attended the drawing and crafts course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, under the aegis of Ferdinand Collman. Around 1804 he visited Paris and Rome and in 1805 together with his colleague Benjamin Ludwig Jollage he created a foundry and a chasing workshop. Their laboratory became an obligatory stop on the Grand Tour and artists of the caliber of Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen asked for their intervention.
Starting from 1819, together with Barthold Georg Niebuhr and Christian Karl Josias von Bunsen, he promoted the foundation of the Lutheran community in Rome.
