John Hoyland Biography

HOYLAND JOHN (1934-2011) Born in 1934 in Sheffield and died in 2011. Lives and works in London. He studied in London at the Sheffield School of Art and the Royal Academy School. Member of the Royal Academy since 1991, he has taught at the Royal Academy School since 1999. His "Colour-field paints" were presented in the "New Generation" exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London in 1964. Until the 1980s he lived in New York for long periods. Recognized by critics as an important representative of international "post-abstraction painting", he was invited to numerous exhibitions including those at the Elkon Robert Gallery and the André Emmerich Gallery in New York and in 1969 he participated in the collective exhibition “Contemporary British Painting". Retrospectives of his paintings were organized in London, at the Serpentine Gallery (1979), the Royal Academy (1999) and the Tate St Ives which in 2006 organized the exhibition "John Hoyland: The Trajectory of a Fallen Angel". He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Purchase Award in 1963, the John Moore's Liverpool Exhibition Award in 1964 and again in 1982, the first prize from the Athena Art Award in 1987. In 1998 he won the Wollaston Award of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The University of Sheffield awarded him an honorary degree in 2003. His works are present in many public and private collections. In September 2010 Hoyland, together with five other English artists, was invited to the exhibition "The Independent Eye: British Contemporary Art. From the collection of Samuel and Gabrielle Lurie", at the Yale Center for British Arts. He was a member of the Academy of San Luca since 2000.
