Kajsa & Nisse Strinning Biography
Architects Nisse Strinning (1917-2006) and Kajsa Strinning (1922-2017) began their careers as designers with a simple steel plate rack, using a technique that would be perfected over the years. In 1949, they created an icon of Scandinavian design, the “String” shelf. Thanks to the practical and functional design, the couple won the Bonnier Folk Library competition. A few years later, in 1954, they received the first international design prize, the gold medal at the Milan Triennale. Nisse Strinning was an architect and inventor, gifted with a rare ability to identify people's needs and imagine solutions to their problems. Many of their projects were created in collaboration with his partner and wife Kajsa, also a designer and planner. Throughout their career, the Strinnings designed objects that could make life easier, tidier and more functional, such as plate holders, trays and garbage bag holders. Nisse and Kajsa Strinning continued to invent new furniture until Nisse's death in 2006. Many of these designs achieved great success.
