Louay Kayalı was born in Aleppo in 1934. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts and exhibited his works for the first time at the Al-Tajhiz school in 1952. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1961 and is returned to Syria to begin his career as a professor of fine arts at Damascus University, where he also taught Fateh Moudarres. In the same year, his exhibition of 28 oil paintings on canvas and 30 sketches was hosted at the International Modern Art Hall in Damascus. It was there that he met the Syrian artist Wahbi Al-Hariri, who would become a lifelong friend and mentor. Moudarres and Kayali together represented Syrian modern art at the Venice Biennale. Kayali suffered from depression and died in 1978 from burns suffered after her bed caught fire, reportedly from a cigarette.
