Poul Kjaerholm Biography

Poul Kjærholm was born in Denmark in 1929 and was one of the main protagonists in the history of Danish design. Throughout his career, he strictly adhered to his own style, which combined the inspiration of the great masters of 1930s Modernism, such as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, with the delicate artisan sensibility typical of Scandinavian design. He was one of the first Danish designers to widely use tubular steel in the design of chair and armchair bases, often combined with warm and natural materials such as leather or wicker for the seat. He studied as a cabinetmaker at the Copenhagen School of Applied Arts, where he was one of the favorite students of the renowned architect Jørn Utzon. Throughout his life, he always remained faithful to the company of his friend Ejvind Kold Christensen, who exclusively produced all his furniture. Among his most important awards, he won two Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale (1957, 1960) and a Lunning Prize (1958). Shortly after his death, the E. Kold Christensen company was acquired by the renowned Fritz Hansen, which currently keeps some of his most iconic products in its collections. Over the years, some of his creations have also been redistributed by Carl Hansen & Søn and PP Møbler.
