Angelo Landi Biography

Angelo Ignazio Giuseppe Landi (Salò, 17 June 1879 – Salò, 15 December 1944) was an Italian painter. He was born on 17 June 1879, at 6 in the morning, Landi Giulia Lucia's first-born twin, in Salò in Contrada del Duomo. His father sent him to study at the Cà Foscari University of Venice, but he fled to Milan to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts. Finally he becomes an Academician of Brera. In this period the artist expresses the best of himself. Among his first portraits, composed between the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century, we remember the "portrait of the anatomist" (1902-1903) on the frame: "in memory of Dr. GBRini, his nephew Dr. PRRini offers . II VI MCMXI", "The violinist", "Affanno", "The young girl". In particular, "the violinist" will enrich the modern art museum of Madrid. (From a recent comparison between the painting of the unnamed "violinist" and some period photographs, it seems that the portrait is compatible with the (photographic) one ) by the French musician Jacques Thibaud born in Bordeaux in 1880 and tragically died in an air disaster in 1953). Rini's portraits go everywhere, from Paris to Buenos Aires, from Cairo to London, from Garda to Milan. He was also a war painter (1915-18), of which he painted the most terrible scenes in a very rich series of oils. During World War I, Landi was recalled with the rank of artillery corporal and attached to the Press and Propaganda Office of the Supreme Command. Of these works, which apparently reached the number of 400, we know today just over thirty drawings and oils. We remember "Cutting the fences" (1915-1918), "Wounded Cavallegere" (1917), "Trench in the snow" (1915-1918), "March in the mountains" (1915-1918), "Dead soldier" (1915-1918 ), "Rest in the trenches" (1915-1918) "Soldiers" (1915-1918), "Life in the trenches - Hunting for lice" (1915-1918), "At altitude 144. after the action" (1915- 1918), "Padovan Nights (1918), "Ruins" (1915-1918), "Battle of Sernaglia" (1918), "Camp" (1915-1918), "The road to Pordenone during the Austrian escape" (1915- 1918), "The predestined in a cave" (1916), "Battle scene with chariots and horses" (1917), "A Bosco Cappuccio" (1918), "The island of the dead - Piave-", "The lookout on the Pecinka", "Hand attached to the fences" and many others. Among his best-known works is the large fresco in the dome of the Basilica of Pompeii, where the author painted 360 figures, on a surface of 509 m², winning a competition The artist died on 15 December 1944 in his home in Carmine, leaving some works at the Vittoriale and at the Savoy hotel in Gardone Riviera (1925)], at the Golfo hotel (formerly Villa Bianchi) in Maderno (1943-1944). he painted "the legend of Engadine", at the Laurin hotel in Salò he painted the "Allegory of the Riviera, at the Town Hall of Salò (Staircase Ceiling) he painted the "Glory of the Magnificent Homeland") at the Victoria hotel (later Bar del Golfo, now Bar Serenissima) also in Salò he painted the ceiling of the ground room with the allegory of the beauties of Garda in the form of young women sitting on the clouds, among flowers and cupids.
