Antonio Giovanni Lanzirotti Biography

Antonio Giovanni Lanzirotti was born on 9 May 1830 in Naples. He studied in Palermo and devoted himself mainly to sculpture from a young age. However, in 1848 his education came to an abrupt end when he decided to take part in the Sicilian insurrection but was imprisoned in the castle of Castel Sant'Elmo in Naples. Subsequently, he left for Paris where he resumed his artistic training. In 1858, Lanzirotti conceived the project of an allegorical group in honor of the emperor Napoleon III and sent a reproduction and a description to the emperor himself, hoping that it would be created for the imperial court. In 1863, in Turin, he received the commission from Vittorio Emanuele II to create the statues of the Conte Verde and Vittorio Amedeo I for the royal palace, where they are still preserved. Having returned to Paris again, he resumed his activity as a sculptor, receiving numerous commissions. In 1882, he settled permanently in Rome where he held public positions, including being appointed among the royal conservators of the Galleries and Museums of the Kingdom of Italy, royal conservator in the ducal palace of Urbino and then curator of the Uffizi in Florence. Antonio Giovanni Lanzirotti died in Palermo on 28 February 1911.
