Henri Lebasque was born on 25 September 1865 in Champigne. He dedicated himself to painting by studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he encountered the work of Maximilien Luce and Paul Signac, who influenced his interest in Pointillism. In 1900, Lebasque was fascinated by Fauvism for its flat shapes and simple, wild colors. In 1924, Lebasque moved to the south of France and this change of setting had a fundamental influence on his works. His palette was enriched with bright colors and his technique focused on the completion of color and the representation of light and shadow. The vitality of nature and sensitivity to beauty are distinctive features of Lebasque's works. For this reason, some critics and artists defined him as the "painter of joy and light". In 1937, Henri Lebasque died in his adopted city, Le Cannet, in the south of France.
