Fernand Leger Biography

(Argentan, 4 February 1881 - Gif-sur-Yvette, 17 August 1955) His reinterpretation of Cubism is characterized by a particular rhythm of colored lines and surfaces, devoid of figurative elements and space for painting, it ceases to be a mirror of reality to reach its own autonomous dimension. Possibilities are no longer the basic criterion and artists freely place shapes and colors according to their inner sensibilities. The painting is not at all easy to read: fragments of figures, houses and trees are still identifiable, but everything is distorted by the dynamic swirl of shapes, no longer real or possible, but subject to a process of geometric simplification. The result is a rigorous asceticism in which objects lose their material coherence and are reduced to their symbolic function. Thus, the characters are completely devoid of personality and expression and become symbols, just as Byzantine art did centuries ago.
