Frederic Leighton was an English artist, born in Scarborough on 3 December 1830 and died in London on 25 January 1896. Known for having been a sculptor and painter during the Pre-Raphaelite era, Leighton is considered one of the finest examples of Victorian art thanks to his works on historical, biblical and mythological subjects. After studying at University College School in London, Leighton undertook a study trip to Europe, where he was introduced to the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. When he returned to London, he joined the Pre-Raphaelites and designed the tomb of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, wife of the poet Robert Browning. In 1864, Leighton became a member of the Royal Academy, of which he became president in 1878. In 1878 he was knighted and in 1896 he was raised to the title of baronet. Leighton died on 25 January 1896 in London, one day after his appointment as a baronet.
