Edwin Long (1829 - 1891) was born in Bath. In 1846 he enrolled at James Matthew Leigh's School of Art in London, but then returned to Bath to begin his career.

Edwin Long (1829 - 1891) was born in Bath. In 1846 he enrolled at James Matthew Leigh's School of Art in London, but then returned to Bath to begin his career.
Traveling to Spain with the painter John Phillip long influenced Long's painting.
In 1874 he traveled through Egypt and Syria. The painting 'Babylonian Marriage Market' (1875) was created from that experience. After returning to England and enjoying great success, Long specialized in well-documented depictions of the ancient world.
In 1881 he was elected a Royal Academician and Agnew & Sons commissioned several works from him, including a series of paintings to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee. He died in Hampstead, aged 61.
