Joseph Charles Marin was born in Paris in 1749. Marin was a French sculptor who studied under the guidance of Claude Michel and attempted to win the Grand Prix de Sculpture several times before the French Revolution. However, he only achieved this recognition in 1801 with the bas-relief entitled "Caius Gracchus leaving his wife Licinia". Michel influenced Marin's initial style, which was characterized by a light, elegant and graceful imprint. As the years passed, Marin moved closer to the style of neoclassicism, choosing more sober subjects. In 1813, at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon, Marin obtained the professorship following the death of his former teacher Joseph Chinard, who occupied the same position before him. Joseph Charles Marin died in Paris on September 18, 1834.
