Livio Mehus Biography

Lieven Mehus (Oudenaarde, 1627 – Florence, 7 August 1691) was a Flemish painter of the Baroque period. Lieven Mehus, translated into Italian and known as Livio Mehus, was a Baroque painter of Flemish origin, he traveled a lot but his adopted homeland was Florence where he was highly appreciated by both the Medici court and the Florentine nobility. His production was very numerous and distributed throughout the Grand Duchy. Born in Oudenaarde, Flanders, in 1627, but according to some sources in 1630, he lived in his hometown until the age of 10, later his father Louis took him to Italy. In 1640 the two Mehus were in Milan, but Livio, fourteen years old, after some time in the workshop of the battle painter called Carlo Fiammingo (who some identify as Carlo Spierincks), decided to reach Rome, then the capital of Italian Baroque. Livio Mehus died in Florence on 7 August 1691. Among his pupils, few given the painter's nomadic character, we remember Bonaventura Gandi, painter of still lifes, Lorenzo Rossi and the most famous Pandolfo Reschi.
