Theobald Michau Biography
Théobald or Thibo Michau or Michou (Tournai, 1676 – Antwerp, 27 October 1765) was a Flemish painter and draftsman specializing in landscape and genre painting. He studied under Lucas Achtschellinck, in Brussels, where he lived from 1686 to 1698. In 1698 he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in this same city. In 1710 he was registered in Antwerp, where he joined the local Guild of Saint Luke (1710-1711). Here he remained permanently until his death in 1765. He dedicated himself above all to genre painting with a style similar to that of David Teniers the Younger, and landscape painting, according to the style of Jan Brueghel the Elder, of whom he was a follower, and of Herman Saftleven , regarding views and topographical representations. He collaborated with Adriaen Frans Boudewijns, inserting figures into his landscapes. Among his students was Martin J. Geeraerts, who specialized in painted bas-reliefs. His works can be found in museums in Antwerp, Tournai, Vienna, Rennes and Rotterdam.
