Aureliano Milani Biography

Aureliano Milani (1675 - 1749) was one of the most original artists of the neo-Carracci movement which developed in Bologna at the end of the seventeenth century and which quickly spread to Rome, where a lively Emilian artistic community already existed. Starting his artistic career in Bologna in his uncle's studio, Milani then perfected his training with Pasinelli and Cesare Gennari. By reworking the language of the Carraccis, he has developed his own stylistic signature, characterized by narrative humor and particular attention to natural data, understood both as an analysis of the landscape element and of the events of the contemporary world.
In 1719, Milani moved to Rome for important commissions, including the decoration of the Gallery of Mirrors in Palazzo Pamphilj in 1732, where he deepened his research on genre painting. In the last years of his activity, Milani formulated a balanced and vibrant synthesis between the Emilian lesson and the Roman Baroque.
