Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, known as Morazzone, was born on 29 July 1573 in Morazzone. He began his career in Rome as an apprentice at the Cavalier D'Arpino's workshop, where he also worked with Caravaggio. Among his first works are the frescoes of S. Silvestro in Capite in Rome. But he suddenly had to leave the city to return to his homeland, where he began working on the Chapel of the Holy Rosary located in the Basilica of S. Vittore in Varese. In the last years of his life, he settled in Milan, where he was called several times by Federico Borromeo. He most likely died in Piacenza in 1626, leaving some frescoes in the Piacenza Cathedral unfinished, which were later completed by Guercino.
