August Murer Biography

(Falcade, 21 May 1922 – Padua, 11 June 1985). Murer's artistic career was marked by a continuous anxiety to verify his own creativity which led him to confront the eternal existential themes (love, sensuality, work, sacrifice, struggle, defeat, death, ...) and to try their hand at different forms of artistic expression (in addition to the favorite ones of wood and bronze sculpture): paintings, drawings, graphic works. Among them we remember only the ten etchings illustrating The Sergeant in the Snow by Mario Rigoni Stern. Among his most significant anthological exhibitions should be remembered those in Falcade (1972), in Milan (Rotonda della Besana, 1973); then in the 1980s those of Ferrara (Palazzo dei Diamanti, 1980-81), of Leningrad (Hermitage Museum, 1982), of Reggio Emilia (1983), of Orvieto (1984), of Milan (Palazzo del Senato, 1984), of Rome (Castel Sant'Angelo, 1985). He died in Padua on 11 June 1985, at the height of his artistic activity. He was particularly fond of his atelier, built in 1972 in Molino di Falcade, in the middle to the woods, by the architect Giuseppe Davanzo of Treviso, an atelier which he transformed into a venue for exhibitions and a cultural center which hosted artists (Renato Guttuso, Ernesto Treccani, Carlo Levi, etc.), political exponents (Sandro Pertini, Giorgio Amendola, etc.) and men of culture (among them we remember Rafael Alberti, who dedicated a poem to Murer the sculptor).
