Francesco Novelli was born in Venice in 1764 and was a multifaceted artist, managing to excel both as a poet and as a painter, engraver and designer. His family had roots in art, in particular his father, Pier Antonio Novelli, was an accomplished Venetian painter and printmaker. Francesco Novelli practiced a lot in copying the works of ancient masters such as Mantegna or Guercino. His skill as an engraver brought him much success and he engraved works by Rembrandt for the Remondinis and other important publishers. The artist also dedicated himself to the reproduction of Rembrandt's etchings, previously included in the collection of Anton Maria Zanetti the Elder, giving even greater prominence to the works of the brilliant Dutch artist, characterized by his creative freedom and originality. Francesco Novelli died in his hometown, Venice, in 1836.
