Orrefors Biography
The history of Orrefors represents an example of how with the use of the simplest ingredients, such as lime, sand and soda, it is possible to transform these elements into magnificent glass artefacts. Thanks to the inspiration coming from the forest and the genius of the artists and designers who work there, Orrefors has established itself as a world leader in the glass sector. Initially, the company was dedicated to the production of glass jars for foods stored within the historic Orrefor glassworks in the 19th century. However, with the advent of social movements and the aspiration towards greater beauty in everyday objects, artists Edward Hald and Simon Gate were called to collaborate with the company. With determination, they started the production of new artifacts characterized by original colors and engravings, which achieved enormous international success through exhibitions, interior design projects and daily use. Soon, the glass from the forests of Småland proved to be one of a kind, without comparison: "Il n'y as que ça!" (There is nothing like it!) exclaimed in unison the visitors to the 1925 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Subsequently, other artists and designers joined Orrefors, reconceiving and refining the designs. Glass, with its ability to adapt and shape, offers endless possibilities to skilled craftsmen who have acquired the necessary expertise. The glass produced today represents the evolution of know-how accumulated over more than a century. The most talented designers continue to surprise the world with the brightness and intrinsic beauty of this material.
