Henri Peinte was born on 24 July 1845 in Cambrai. His work as a sculptor was rather limited and he is mainly known for the few sculptures he made, including many representations of mythological subjects. Henri Peinte first studied at the Cambrai drawing school and later, thanks to a scholarship, he was able to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His first exhibition at the Salon took place in 1877 and he achieved important recognition, a third class medal, with his sculpture entitled “Sarpedon”, which became his best-known work. “Sarpedon” was made in bronze by the founder Siot-Decauville and was located in the flower garden of Cambrai, but unfortunately it was destroyed during the First World War and replaced only in 1933. Henri Peinte was made a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honor by decree of 29 October 1896. Peinte died on 26 December 1912 in Paris.
