Nello Pini Biography

Nello Pini (Livorno, 12 December 1921 – Livorno, 3 March 1993) was an Italian designer, cabinetmaker and entrepreneur. As a boy together with his father Pilade, Pini carried out important works in the public buildings of Livorno including the fixtures of the Costanzo Ciano Hospital with the then technological soft touch window (still visible today in the hospital fixtures), the interiors of the Naval Academy and of the Moorish style villas of Viale Italia, the furnishings of the famous "Baracchina Rossa" and the wooden buildings of the American base Camp Darby. After the war, the Pini company, thanks to the inventions created by Nello, built its historic headquarters in the central Via Grande, which had just been rebuilt after being devastated by the bombings of the Second World War. The building was designed by Nello himself in a modern and functional style, thanks to its futuristic façade in crystal panels (hence the name Crystal Palace) it became a real attraction in the sixties and seventies especially for its tall Christmas tree 5 floors and directly visible from the outside. Subsequently, the Pini company was transformed into Mobilificio Gigante Pini, participating with this company name in the Milan fair. At the end of the seventies the Mobilificio Gigante Pini moved its furniture exhibition to Via Firenze, further changing its name to Interiodesign. Nello Pini used to say about himself: I am a simple carpenter... but with a lot of imagination.
