Giovanni Renica (Montirone, 1808- Brescia, 1884). An important artist on the Brescia scene, he began his education at the Brescia gymnasium with the help of the architect Rodolfo Vantini. In 1828 in Milan he attended the Brera Academy, forming a deep bond with Cannella. His style is characterized by a strong expressive immediacy, attention to perspective and use of intense colors. Starting from the techniques of Romanesque landscape painting, he developed an autonomous style, providing an important model for the representation of landscape in the nineteenth century. In 1841 he exhibited his most important works, after a trip to the East in the wake of the Milanese count Renato Borromeo, who wanted him at his side also in Switzerland where the artist had the opportunity to broaden his horizons, developing a new sensitivity. His travels, especially the one in the East, offer an important opportunity to carry out a sort of pictorial reportage which then inspires his works.
