Marco Ricci was a painter, engraver and landscape painter born on 5 June 1676 in Belluno. Following a fight, his violent temper forced him to move to Split. In this period, he created a series of works depicting the Dalmatian coast and the Piave River, which are still distinguished today by their Titian style and fusion of the Romantic views of his predecessors. The works of this period are characterized by dark or yellowish colouring. Later, he met Alessandro Magnasco, and their collaboration led to the creation of a collection of scenes of sea storms, in very dark tones. In his last creative period, the artist devoted himself to painting tempera on parchment, which can now be admired in Windsor Castle. Although he was a landscape painter, his caricatural portraits of dramatic actors are still appreciated today. Thanks to his great skill, he was an example for the great Venetian painters of the 18th century. On January 21, 1729, he committed suicide in Venice.
