Wilhelm August Rieder was a well-known Austrian painter and designer, born in Oberdöbling on 30 October 1796. From a young age, he demonstrated a predisposition for drawing, so he decided to continue his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna where he also had the opportunity to form a friendship with Franz Schubert. During his career, he painted a series of portraits of Schubert and created many religious and historical-themed works. In 1825 he achieved an appointment as professor of drawing at the Vienna Institute of Engineering, and then in 1855 he was appointed to a similar post at the Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. From 1857 to 1878 he was curator of the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna. Wilhelm August Rieder died in Vienna on 8 September 1880.
