Stefano Robino Biography

Stefano Robino was born in Turin in 1922. He began working as a technical designer at FIAT Grandi Motori in 1939, but his passion for painting led him to exhibit his works in personal and collective exhibitions after the Second World War. In 1940 he also began to dedicate himself to photography and in particular to the investigation of human nature. Robino described himself as "a painter who photographs", and in fact his first images had references to classical and modern painting.
In 1952 Stefano Robino became the father of his firstborn, and this event significantly influenced his artistic poetics. His subjects were enriched with new elements linked to family and childhood. His exhibition activity intensified, and Robino received various awards for his work. In the 1960s and 1970s his attention focused on industrial work, society and the changing urban landscape.
Stefano Robino died in Turin in 2017. His photographs have been published in various magazines, including LIFE, Popular Photography Italiana and Ferrania. Among his most famous exhibitions are "Stefano Robino" (Collegno and Turin, 2004), "Paths of light. Photographer artists in Turin from 1946 to 1970" (Turin, 2004) and "Annicinquanta. The birth of Italian creativity" ( Milan, 2005). In 2014 his exhibition "Doing, the limit, beauty. At the origins of an industrial Italy" (CMC, Milan) was organized by ADMIRA.
