Georges-antoine Rochegrosse Biography

Georges Antoine Rochegrosse, born in Versailles on 2 August 1859, was a French painter and illustrator. He received his artistic training at the Académie Julian under the guidance of the orientalist painter Alfred Dehodencq. Later, he attended the ateliers of the portraitist Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger, known for having invented the style called Neo-Greek. Throughout his career, Rochegrosse devoted himself mainly to historical genre painting. Thanks to his works, he was awarded the title of Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1892. Rochegrosse was also a popular poster designer and book illustrator. But his greatest inspiration came from Algeria, then a French territory. Here, he decided to settle permanently in 1900. He returned to his homeland only to choose the works to exhibit at the Salon, of which he was also an advisor. During the thirty-eight years he spent in Algeria, Rochegrosse painted many paintings related to the oriental world, from paintings representing the Harems, to the exotic characters and landscapes that his admirers liked. Georges Antoine Rochegrosse died in Algiers in 1938.
