Rossi Nunzio (Naples, 1626 - Sicily, 1651) Rossi Nunzio was an Italian artist. He frequented the Neapolitan workshop of Francesco Stanzione. In Nunzio Rossi's painting the typical characteristics of Neapolitan artistic culture between 1630 and 1650 are evident. His style remained very far from that of Bologna, even if there is a hint of Guido Reni's painting, visible in the representation of the naked Baby Jesus and of Mary with her hands folded. The artist worked for the Bolognese aristocracy, showing a rejection of the classical Bolognese tradition in favor, instead, of a strong realism with dark tones. A sign of Rossi's success was his move to Messina to stay with Prince Ruffo, to decorate his majestic residence. The artist's style is characterized by the use of dense and pasty brushstrokes, forcefully impressed on the canvas, and by his streak as a narrator, evident in the distraught physiognomies of the characters.
