Vernis Sage, pseudonym of Gino Falzon, is a well-known Italian artist born in 1916 whose pictorial production reveals a marked propensity for expressionism. His work is aimed at representing the vital and dynamic energy of the subjects he represents, especially animals, which constitute the protagonists of his canvases. The gestural and material character of his complex pictorial technique, in fact, allows the artist to best express these dynamic forces. Expressionistic synthesis, therefore, constitutes the fulcrum of Vernissa's poetics. Starting from sensitive data, the artist subjects them to a simplification process aimed at enhancing their dynamic vitality. The representation is not based on a naturalistic imitation of reality, but on the creation of a chromatic field that allows the development of pictorial synthesis. Even the space that houses the subjects represented takes on an almost informal connotation but, at the same time, is intended to involve the spectator in the expressive force of the work. Vernis Sage's palette features a strong use of red and black, often combined with other brown tones, which further enhance the immediacy and vitality of his works.
