Amleto Sartori Biography

Amleto Sartori (Padua, 3 November 1915 – Padua, 18 February 1962) was an Italian sculptor and poet famous above all for his studies on the theatrical mask and their creations. A sculptor, after the Second World War he began a fervent period of study on the Commedia dell'Arte mask which led him to a technique of modeling leather masks on a wooden mold which later became famous. His son Donato will also follow in his father's footsteps by undertaking the same artistic path. The friendship with Jacques Lecoq, who introduced him to the Piccolo Teatro in Milan where he met Giorgio Strehler and Paolo Grassi, was one of the stages in the sculptor's career, soon sought after by other artists such as Ferruccio Soleri and Marcello Moretti for the construction of masks for theater show. In 1979 his son Donato Sartori founded the Center for Masks and Gestural Structures in Padua, while in 2004, again following his death, the "Amleto and Donato Sartori" International Mask Museum was founded in Abano Terme.
