Sergio Conti, Marisa Forlani & Luciano Grassi Biography

The Tuscan architect and designer Luciano Grassi (1927-2008) created, together with Sergio Conti and Marisa Forlani, the Monofilo chair series. Since the early 1950s, Grassi has reflected on the balance between tradition and modernity, on the possibility of combining an artisanal production method with continuous attention to formal experimentation and the search for new materials without ever losing sight of the functional aspect. The Monofilo collection completely fuses an industrial approach with craftsmanship. The chairs have a metal structure within which nylon thread has been woven into a dense weave that required craftsmanship. The Cesto chairs focus their shapes on the repetition of basic geometric figures. The first idea for the Monofilament was that the object should be extracted from a geometric shape or combinations of various elementary geometric shapes, which should open up to facilitate construction. This simplification also had to be favored by the use of low-cost materials and the reduction of labor interventions.
