Shiraz is an ancient and fascinating city located in Fars, the region where ancient Persia stood. Although the name is associated with a wide range of traditional "nomadic" carpets, in reality Shiraz has always been an unsuitable place for carpet production, apart from the work of a few immigrant families. The carpets were primarily produced by the region's nomadic tribes, who came from different parts of the world and had disparate artistic techniques and traditions. The Shiraz carpet is made entirely of wool, with thin warps that make it soft and light, and the red color predominates. The designs derive from ancient times and are well defined, often preserved as a family emblem and with natural or environmental symbols such as people, tools, archaeological remains, animals and vegetation. Each design is named after the tribe of origin. The technical characteristics of the Shiraz carpet include the symmetrical wool knot and the wool warp and weft.
