Stephan Abel Sinding was a Norwegian sculptor born on 4 August 1846 in Trondheim. After studying law at the University of Christiania, he decided to devote himself to sculpture and attended the Royal School of Drawing in the same city. He subsequently moved to Berlin where he continued to deepen his artistic training thanks to the teachings of Albert Wolff. Between 1874 and 1875, Sinding settled in Paris and later traveled to Rome. In these cities, he was able to acquire new experiences which led him to develop a personal style in which different artistic currents such as realism, classicism and romantic Nordic traditions coexisted. During his journey, Sinding was influenced by German and Scandinavian romanticism, by Michelangelo and Classicism, and by the figure of Auguste Rodin. His art had a strong symbolist imprint, certainly evident in the Valkyrie, a bronze statue created in 1908 and now located in the Churchillpark in Copenhagen. In 1910 he decided to move to Paris, where he lived until his death on 23 January 1922.
