Federico Sustris Artwork valuations, appraisals and auction estimates

Federico Sustris was an Italian mannerist architect, painter and decorator.
Some sources indicate that he was born in Amsterdam between 1520 and 1526, but it is more likely that his birth occurred around 1540 and he died in 1599.
His father, also a painter, moved to Italy at a young age and lived for many years in Venice following the style of Titian, before moving to Padua.
Federico Sustris worked in Italy from 1563 to 1568, where he was an assistant to the famous artist Vasari, also participating in Michelangelo's funeral in 1564, and in 1567 he was appointed advisor to the Florentine Academy of Drawing.
From 1569 onwards, he worked for Hans Fugger in Augsburg, decorating two palace rooms with grotesques and the Trausnitz Castle above Landshut for the crown prince of Bavaria, Wilhelm, where he painted several allegorical and mythological figures with the help of other artists such as Antonio Ponzano and Carlo Pallago. In 1579, Wilhelm became Duke of Bavaria and commissioned Sustris to supervise architectural works in Munich.

In 1579, Wilhelm became Duke of Bavaria and commissioned Sustris to supervise architectural works in Munich.
Sustris built the Jesuit church of St. Michael in Munich from 1583 to 1597, a majestic work that combined fifteenth-century German construction ideas with Italian baroque elements. This church became a prototype of Baroque ecclesiastical architecture throughout southern Germany.
The few works on canvas and panel are uncertain as to their authenticity, but they are very eclectic, with clear Venetian influences that his father passed on to him. Even his drawings, preserved in the Munich cabinet, are mainly sketches for the frescoes.
Federico Sustris was one of the most active propagators of this style in southern Germany and managed to merge elements of local art in an original way with the Italian art that he had intensely studied.
