Ussi Stefano (Florence, 1822 - Florence, 1901) Stefano Ussi was an Italian painter, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. After participating as a volunteer in the Tuscan contingent in the war against Austria, in 1849 Ussi won a three-year academic painting competition with the work "Resurrection of Lazarus". In the 1950s he began to frequent Michelangelo's Caffè group, becoming interested in the debate around naturalistic poetics. In 1861 he exhibited one of his most famous paintings "The Expulsion of the Duke of Athens" at the first Italian Exhibition in Florence, whose style, careful to recall historical verisimilitude, recalls that of Paul Delaroche and Domenico Morelli. Subsequently the work was purchased by the Royal Government, interpreted as a possibility of renewing the painting of Italian history. He thus obtained a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1867.
