Andrea Vaccaro (Naples, 8 May 1604 – Naples, 18 January 1670) was an Italian Baroque painter. In his works he is inspired by the naturalism of Caravaggio, reinterpreting it in a classicist key. He assimilates different schools of painting and the main characteristics of his works are the regularity of the shapes, the use of light shades of color that fade into the background and the almost total absence of violent expressions and attitudes in the painted figures. Important in his life was the meeting with Bernardo Cavallino, with whom Vaccaro established a friendship. Between 1630 and 1660 he took great inspiration for his works from the painter Anton Van Dyck. Andrea Vaccaro worked mainly on ecclesiastical commissions: his way of painting saints and martyrs in attitudes of particular devotion and particular expressiveness made him one of the most famous and most requested artists by the Church during the Counter-Reformation period.
