Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613 – 1670) was a Dutch painter. Talented Dutch painter and portraitist contemporary of Rembrandt. The son of a Haarlem innkeeper, Van der Helst moved to Amsterdam in 1636 and married in the same year. His first group portrait was painted for the regents of the Walloon Orphanage in 1637. Van Helst soon became the most popular painter of portraits in that city, with his flattering portraits in the style of Anton Van Dyck, a style somewhat more accessible than the apparently dark and introspective one of Rembrandt's late production. Even some of Rembrandt's pupils, including Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck, would adopt Van Helst's style over the years.
