Van Onck Andries & Hiroko Biography

Andries Van Onck (born 1928 in Amsterdam) obtained a degree in Industrial Design in the Netherlands and subsequently studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm with Tomas Maldonado, Walter Zeischegg and Max Bill. Since 1959 he has lived in Italy, where he collaborated with Ettore Sottsass Jr. on the design of Olivetti's first electronic machines. Hiroko Takeda (born 1945) graduated from the Tokyo Academy. From 1968 to 1972 he collaborated with various Japanese companies in the furniture sector. Since 1972 he has lived and worked in Italy together with Andries Van Onck. In 1965 Andries founded his own design studio in Milan (now in Gavirate - VA), where, together with his wife Hiroko Takeda, he developed numerous projects for Italian and foreign companies, obtaining numerous awards: from household appliances for Zanussi and Bertazzoni to interfaces audio and video for Amplyvox, from cutlery for Serafino Zani to furnishing accessories for Magis, etc. Andries and Hiroko van Onck have participated in numerous international exhibitions and their products are part of the permanent design collections of various museums around the world. Both have published articles and volumes on design and design theory and have taught at important European universities.
