Scipione Vanutelli Biography
Scipione Vannutelli (Genazzano, 10 November 1834 – Rome, 18 May 1894) was an Italian engraver and painter. Scipione Vannutelli, belonging to a rich and noble Roman family, was born in Genazzano (Rome). He was a student of Tommaso Minardi and the Viennese Wurtzinger, he also studied abroad: in Vienna, Paris, the Netherlands and Spain. He made his debut in 1861 at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Florence. After his experiences abroad he lived mainly in Rome. He was also an engraver and superintendent of the Royal National Chalcography in Rome. The author is famous for his academic style, his art refers above all to the painting of the Nazarenes. Illustrious for his historical paintings, landscapes, portraits and, mainly, genre paintings, his church interiors are famous. Scipione Vannutelli expressed himself with the techniques of oil, tempera, watercolor and engraving.
