Velca Biography

Velca was founded in 1954. Its first significant revenue growth was attributed to the production of furniture designed to provide solid support for televisions. Coincidentally, in 1954 the official programming of television broadcasts aimed at the general public began in Italy. Another important development came with the important order that led the Legnano company to supply the furniture for the Autogrills, which were beginning to spread along the Italian motorways at the beginning of the economic boom. Subsequently, the company dedicated itself to the production of the first series of chairs and stools with metal structures. The second phase of growth included the transfer from the small factory in Via Balbo to the new headquarters in Via Jucker and, at the end of the sixties, the policy of recruiting young designers called to renew the catalog by creating new products. Hundreds of innovative solutions were devised. Among the "icons" of the group, three furnishing accessories that bear the signature of the same designers (Roberto Lucci and Paolo Orlandini), namely the Scaleo staircase, the series of Vip coat hangers and the Golf stool. These products were widely marketed throughout Europe and are still considered cult objects for enthusiasts of the sector today. A highlight concerns Velca's main product line, with its numerous variations: the K series of chairs, developed over four years of work by Lucci and Orlandini and initially designed by Renzo Piano on behalf of Vedani and Casaroli. The many variations have made the K series the company's most commercially successful product, with a reputation that has transcended European borders, spreading significantly to the United States and Japan. The history of Velca is also connected to that of the protagonists Vito and Gustavo Latis, authors of important projects in contemporary architecture, including the headquarters in Via Jucker: a cutting-edge industrial building that still represents an architectural point of reference in the sector in Lombardy .
