Mario Vellani Marchi Biography

Mario Vellani Marchi (Modena, 1895 – Milan, 1979) was an Italian painter. Born in Modena in 1895, he studied there at the local Academy of Fine Arts where he was a student of Giuseppe Graziosi and Pio Semeghini. He took part as an officer in the First World War. In 1924 he was invited to participate in the Venice Biennale; in the following years he will return to take part in eleven other editions. He moved to Milan in 1925; he knows Orio Vergani and Riccardo Bacchelli and is among the founders of the artistic cenacle in via Bagutta. He is among the painters that the entrepreneur Giuseppe Verzocchi contacted for his collection of works on the theme of work: between 1949 and 1950, Vellani Marchi created the Piccole merlettaie buranelle (1949-1950), a painting which, together with the Self-portrait, it is today preserved in the Verzocchi Collection, at the Civic Art Gallery of Forlì. He was called to teach at ISIA, the innovative art school started a few years earlier in Monza. He collaborates with various magazines: La Fiera Letteraria, La Lettura and L'Illustrazione italiana. He also creates costumes and scenographic settings for the Teatro alla Scala. He died in Milan in 1979.
