Hendrik Verschuring was a Dutch landscape painter born in Gorinchem in 1627, famous for decorating his paintings with figures of soldiers on horseback. At the age of eight, he began his apprenticeship as a portrait painter with Dirck Govertsz. At thirteen, he entered Jan Both's workshop, where he remained for six years. Subsequently, he left for Rome where he explored and sketched every corner of the city, including new buildings and elements of interest. Thanks to his fame, he was also in demand in Venice and spent a decade in Italy. In 1662, Verschuring returned to Gorinchem, where he continued to paint soldiers on horseback in natural landscapes. He died in 1690 in Dordrecht.
