Maximilian Von Fichard (1836-1923) was born in Lviv, Ukraine, in 1836, but came from an aristocratic family in Frankfurt. He was an engineer officer in the Austrian army. During the years 1870-74, he attended painting courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, and later moved to Bavaria where he received high praise for his works which were typical of the "Biedermeier" cultural movement of the mid-nineteenth century. In 1895, De Fichard moved to Italy and settled in Belgirate where he continued to work. Here he became friends with Eugenio Gignous and other artists of Lombard naturalism.
