Hubert Von Herkomer Biography
Sir Hubert von Herkomer was born in Germany, in Waal, in August 1849. From an early age he showed a great passion for art and music, which he cultivated with dedication and talent. After his family moved to England, Herkomer continued to develop his skills, becoming a professional illustrator.
One of his most famous paintings, titled "Hard Times", showed a family of itinerant workers forced to live on the fringes of society. This and other similar works made Herkomer an artist committed to social injustices.
In 1879 he was elected member of the Academy, while ten years later he became an academic. In 1894 he became a full member of the Royal Watercolor Society and in 1885 he was appointed Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University.
During his career, Herkomer had the opportunity to meet numerous illustrious people, including King Otto of Bavaria, who ennobled Ritter in 1899, and King Edward VII, who knighted him in 1907.
Hubert von Herkomer died on 31 March 1914, leaving behind an indispensable artistic legacy that made him one of the most representative British painters of the 19th century
