Lenbach ‹léenbakℎ›, Franz Seraph von. - German painter (Schrobenhausen, Bavaria, 1836 - Munich 1904); Self-taught, he was influenced by K. Th. Piloty, with whom he worked in Munich (1857) and, after he was in Rome (1858), by A. Böcklin and K. Begas. From the study of Rubens, Titian, Velázquez, he gained considerable technical ability. Dedicated above all to portraits, he also acquired European fame for the importance of the characters portrayed (among other things, he painted around eighty portraits of Chancellor Bismarck). His villa built by G. von Seidl, sold to the state in 1924, houses one of the most prestigious art collections (Munich, Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus).
