Cornelis Von Poelenburgh Biography

Cornelis van Poelenburgh, Dutch painter and draftsman, was born in Utrecht in 1586. He founded the Dutch Italianate school of landscape painting together with other Flemish artists. He began his training at the workshop of the mannerist painter Abram Bloemaert in Utrecht.
From 1617 to 1625 he lived in Rome, where he improved his painting style following the example of Raphael. Furthermore, together with other Dutch artists, he founded a group of Flemish painters and received the nickname "Satyr". He also worked in Florence for the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Returning to Holland, Cornelis became one of Utrecht's most important painters. At the invitation of the king, he worked in England from 1638 to 1641.
Cornelis van Poelenburgh's works included not only historical paintings, but also many romantic landscapes of ruins and statue fragments. He was one of the first artists to have demonstrated the ability to represent sunlight on a canvas and the Italian atmosphere. He copied some works by the German artist Adam Elsheimer, usually painting them on copper.
Cornelis van Poelenburgh died in Utrecht in 1667.
