Marcel Wanders Biography
Marcel Wanders (1963 - ) was born in 1963 in Boxtel, the Netherlands, and founded his studio in 1995 in Amsterdam. His fame arrived in 1996 when he designed the Knotted Chair for Droog Design, an iconic armchair consecrated in the history of design when MoMA chose to include it in its permanent collection. Training at the Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, the Netherlands, strengthened the talent of this creative visionary. In almost thirty years, Studio Wanders has undertaken numerous collaborations in the field of product and interior design, with private clients and leading brands such as Alessi, B&B Italia, Baccarat, Barovier & Toso, Bisazza, Boffi, Christofle, Cappellini, Ceramiche Bardelli, Flos, Lladrò, Magis, Natuzzi, Poliform, Roche Bobois, Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, Vondom. His production of almost two thousand projects is characterized by the unity of a bold and ironic style that combines artisanal inspiration, contemporary look, human dimension and industrial breath. In 2001 he founded Moooi with Casper Vissers. The name of the brand derives from the Dutch word "Mooi", linked to the concept of "beauty". The Moooi collections, which range from sofas to lamps, from tables to wardrobes, reflect the eccentric and unconventional spirit that characterizes Marcel Wanders' poetics. Numerous projects dedicated to hotels and restaurants, such as the interiors of the Blits in Rotterdam, Thor at the Hotel on Rivington in New York and the Mondrian in Doha. The world of contract is an opportunity for Wanders to materialize his dreamlike language, which interprets design as a romantic and human-centered project, respecting the past and cultural differences. Wanders' most successful products include the Sky Garden lamp for Flos (2007); the Circus tableware collection for Alessi (2016); the Pebbles chairs for Bisazza (2004); the Gentlemen Collection for Poliform (2019); the Calliope chandelier collection for Wonderglass (2017); and the children's furniture series The Parents Collections for Cybex (2016). In addition to MoMA, his works are celebrated at the Center Pompidou in Paris, the V&A Museum in London, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Pinakotheke der Moderne in Munich, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Central Museum in Utrecht.
