Michael Wolgemut, or Wohlgemuth (Nuremberg, 1434 – Nuremberg, 30 November 1519), was a German painter and typographer. He was the head of a large workshop, in which young apprentices practiced different types of figurative arts. Among them were personalities such as Albrecht Dürer, who completed his apprenticeship between 1486 and 1489. His works are innovative as they represent volumes and shadows with much greater detail than had been done until then. Wolgemut was one of the artists who rewrote the canons of woodcut in the Germany of his time. His paintings show an influence of the Flemish school: it is not excluded that he traveled to Flanders. The oldest work we know of by Wolgemut is a four-panel retable, dated 1465, found in the Munich art gallery, a decorative work of great beauty. His portrait by Albrecht Durer is famous. Wolgemut died in Nuremberg in 1519.
