From 1903 to 1904 he traveled to Italy with the painter Fritz Müller-Schwaben (1879-1957). In 1906 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, where he attended the class of the animal painter Julius Paul Junghanns, of whom he became a student. He graduated in 1908 and left the academy in 1912. From 1909 to 1914 he participated in Heinrich von Zügel's school of animal painting. He participated in the First World War as a soldier, during which he created paintings of landscapes and the daily life of German soldiers at the front. In 1913 Wolf participated in the Great Art Exhibition of Düsseldorf from 1914 to 1941, when he exhibited at the Glass Palace in Munich. In 1937 he was present at the Great German Art Exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. In 1934 he became a member of the Reich Chamber of Culture.
