The hilt ends in a lobed and cuspidate element, and shows intricate and very fine carvings of interwoven half-palmettes on all sides. Hilts of this kind were typical of the Ottoman production of the XVI – XVII centuries. Furthermore, similar decorations are present on two ivory mirrors made for Suleiman the Magnificent in 1543 – 1554 (Atil, The Age of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, 1987, p. 139). For similar examples refer to: the one at the British Museum in London (museum number: 1878.1230.817); the one at the Historische Museum of Dresda; another at the Walters Art Museum of Baltimore (Accession number 71.571); the item part of the collection The Furusiyya Art Foundation published in Bashir, The Arts of the Muslim Knight, 2008, p. 164, and the hilts published in Holger Schuckelt, Turckische Cammer: Orientalische Pracht in der Rustkammer Dresden, 2009.
