ASTA 193 - FINE CHINESE, ASIAN & ISLAMIC WORKS OF ART
Lot 199
This extraordinary painted-wood sculpture depicts the seated bodhisattva, whose lavish dress softly covers her knees. The chest of the bodhisattva is exposed and the necklace is clearly visible, as a symbol of regality. Her headgear is surprisingly rich and in the middle of it there is a figure of Amitayus, one of the celestial Buddhas. It is interesting to know that, until the 12th century, the bodhisattva of compassion was represented, like in this case, with a more masculine appearance. Later, being the embodiment of compassion, with all the carachteristics of a merciful mother, she was represented in her typical feminine form. This sculpture shows polychrome remains and has glass paste eyes. Arms are missing. A similar object is located in Shanghai Museum.
